Cathy Young

I am a mixed media artist from Minneapolis.  Music is a starting point for many of my mosaics. I never know where the music will take me– that is where improvisation and pattern come in to play.

I work with tiles, glass, china, found objects, beads, crystals, amethyst and other semi precious stones. Working with stones and found objects is intuitive for me.  I place the the first tile down and it begins to tell me a story, a mystery I have to solve. I hide within a piece of glass or tile. My mosaics are up to the viewer to interpret.

This is a virtual exhibition of mosaics, a slow dance in response to the pandemic. The dance starts late in 2019, tracing past memories and evolving into future memories yet to be made. I explore the soul through these bizarre and unequaled times. These abstract works showcase experimental rhythms, voice and dance.

There is a paisley theme that floats through this exhibition. Its ancient Persian and Indian origins possess hidden messages and mysterious symbolism. The iconic paisley pattern travelled the silk routes from the East to the West, eventually finding a home in the heartland with Prince and Paisley Park.

This magical motif pulsates throughout these pages with the promise of an imagined paradise–a place where spiritual anxieties are eased through the musicians of Minneapolis.
